Happy new year! 2025! Hopefully, a year to be remembered fondly. 2024 brought one of the most exciting CFL seasons we've had in years, with the standings being oh-so close for most of the year. Now, as we prepare for this year's CFL season, free agency is right around the corner. Being regarded as one of the most exciting offseason periods, free agency brings big roster shakeups and tons of excitement. Teams usually try to fill in holes in their roster, and today, I'll provide one item that every team should be looking for in free agency.
BC LIONS: RETURNER
The Lions have quite the solid roster all around, but one area they need someone is a returner. Terry Williams was just released by the Lions, and they need someone with similar speed and explosivity that Williams has. Mario Alford may be a potential option, as he's set to become a free agent in February.
EDMONTON ELKS: RECIEVER
It doesn't look like Eugene Lewis will be back in Edmonton this year, and Dillon Mitchell was just released. The Elks still have some good options at receiver, but they will want to get some big play options for Tre Ford, who appears to be the number one QB for 2025.
CALGARY STAMPEDERS: LINEBACKER
After going out and trading Cam Judge for Folarin Orimolade, the Stamps have a hole to fill on their roster. They need to go out and find a dominant linebacker who can have the same impact as Cam Judge, like Jameer Thurman, who is a pending free agent.
SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS: DEFENSIVE BACK
The Riders have a great secondary, but there are a few holes. Rider fans were not happy with the performance of Amari Henderson for most of the season, so the Riders may look to upgrade Henderson's defensive back spot this free agency.
WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS: LINEBACKER
With the emergence of Tony Jones as a solid option in the linebacking core, the Bombers already have some good options. However, Adam Bighill may be on the chopping block for the Bombers this season, which means that they could use a veteran prescence guiding the defense.
HAMILTON TIGER-CATS: DEFENSIVE BACK
The Ti-Cats had one of the worst defenses in the league last year. There were many times when the opposing team would throw for over 300 yards in a game, especially in their blowout loss to BC. They should try to go out and get an all-star defensive back to help bolster the defense.
TORONTO ARGONAUTS: OFFENSIVE LINE
The Argos had a great offensive line in 2024, but they recently lost Isaiah Cage in a trade with the BC Lions. Toronto should try and find a replacement piece in free agency this year to help keep their O-line at the top of the league.
OTTAWA REDBLACKS: OFFENSIVE LINE
The Redblacks finished the year with the 2nd worst sack total in the league, three less than BC. They may also want to target upgrading their offensive line to help newly acquired running back, William Stanback.
MONTREAL ALOUETTES: DEFENSIVE LINE
Derek Wiggan retired in the offseason, so the Alouettes may need to look for a replacement for him. Mustafa Johnson and Lwal Uguak have been good for the Als, but they may look for a complimentary piece to their defensive line in free agency.
